Process

Design

Design shapes what people see and do, starting with the people who will use the product and what each of them has to get done. Every builder then works from one picture of the whole, so the product comes out as one product.

Two directions, one chosen A small map of screens is pinned to the wall, with one screen marked. Dashed lines lead from it to two sheets pinned below, each drawing that screen a different way: one puts a picture beside the text, the other a wide band over three cards. On the floor beside them sits the Design cat, a calico in a purple beret, which has drawn a purple check on the right sheet with its pencil.

How it goes

  1. The people and their tasks

Who uses it, how they arrive, and what they have to get done.

  2. More than one direction

Two or more answers to the same real screen, drawn so they can be compared.

  3. One direction chosen

One direction goes forward, with the reason written down.

  4. One picture of the whole

A map of every screen and a short set of standards that every builder reads first.

  5. A last walk

The finished product is used the way each person would use it.

It starts with the people, not the screens

Before anything is drawn, the Design friend works out who will use the product, how each person arrives, and what they have to get done. The screens are chosen to serve those tasks.

More than one answer, on a real screen

For a new interface or a redesign, the Design friend draws at least two directions on the same real screen from the task. It critiques each one against what the people have to do, including where it repeats a default. It marks one as chosen and says why, and Becca judges the design.

One picture of the whole product

Design work keeps a map of every screen and a short set of standards. Every builder reads the standards before building, so many builders make one product.

A last walk, as each person would

When a piece of work got a full design, it ends with the Design friend using the finished product the way each person would. A break in someone's task counts as a finding against the work.

See it in the work

This site went through it. Its design started as three directions: a gallery wall, a reading room, and a drawing set. The drawing set was chosen, and each page is a sheet in that set. Start from the home page.

A rebrand's first page missed a business with many services. The second round designed the whole site from a map of it. Read Back to the drawing board.
